Simple one really. I want some Hope Hoops and was wondering if its worth getting the straight pull hubs instead of the normal type? Are there any strength advantages, easier to true etc.

Cheers

The theory is that SP spokes does away with the weak part of the spoke ie the elbow.

A well built wheel however and this is very rarely a problem.

IHMO straight pull doesn't look as good as a nicely laced normal wheel, the hub just looks ugly. Only spoke I've broken snapped in the middle, so I don't think there is much strength difference.

I believe the theory is that SP makes spoke replacement easier? I think it looks better too.

It is easier yes. Also easier for them to unhook too

I quite like the look of the SP hubs over the normal ones. Can you buy them to have them custom built as I wouldn't mind some spangly, tarty colours?

The only difference you will notice if the wheel is well built is the SP looks amazing.

If made badly both have their problems.

SP spokes are harder to find, so if you (for instance) take your straight pull wheels to fort william and break a spoke on your first run like a big knobber, you'll end up doing the rest of the weekend with one missing spoke because not one shop in the town has any SP spokes at all, never mind the ones you want. That's not likely to happen with traditional spokes, you might not get exactly what you want but you'll get something.

    Thanks all.

I think i'll stick to the standard hubs.

Was also looking at the Nuke Proof Generator AM wheels yesterday. They look pretty good value. Has anyone any experience of them? They might be a little over the top for what I need though.

Between myself and the wife we're running normal spoked Pro 2 hubs, a set of 32 straight pull spoked Pro3 XC's (ltd edition) and a pair of Pro 3 AM striaght pulls.

You do get a spare pair of spokes with the SP wheels, so as long as you remember to chuck 'em in the bike bag when you go on hols, you shouldn't have a problem. IN theory, they're less likely to snap than a normal spoke aswell. Might just be my imagination, but the SP XC's do feel stiffer than the equivalent normal spoked Pro2. Only down side with the XC's is that the freehub is even noisier than the Pro2 hub. (though it certainly scatters the ramblers!)

I can thoroughly recommend the Pro3 SP-AM hubs with Flow rims - tough and stiff, but still fairly light.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Now for the rims. I like the look of the Flows for something different but think they may be too much for what I need. The 717's would be my other choice (had DT's before and want something different this time) but am worried they might not be strong enough. Its not that I ride hard or jump about much but I am about 15 stone and worry that any jumps and drops I do, that i'd break the more XC type rims.

    What do you think?

If your worried about busting Mavic 717 rims how about Mavic 719 rims they are what I have and they are tough.

I mistimed jumping over a water bar and landed the front wheel right on the corner of the stone work going at a fair old lick I thought I was going to land teeth first. It put a wobble in the wheel but half an hour with a spoke key had it running true again. I reckon a lighter wheel would have gone boom.

717s are pretty strong for an XC rim, but heavy too. Stans rims are more expensive but from everything I've seen are stronger than the equivalent Mavics by a fair way.

I've looked at the 719's but they have to be custom made. That adds about £50 or more in some cases to what you can get the ready made hoops for. Its something to consider if the budget allows anyway. Then I can have my red hubs back!

Anyone know what valve type the Stans rims use? I would much rather use the car type. I hate the Presta's with a passion!

I can live with them I suppose.

Any idea if my Specialized Fast Trak 2.0 tyres would be OK on the Flows? It says they are for 2.0 - 2.5 tyres.

Well, after stubs put me on to them, I have decided on Mavic 719's on Pro 2's (red for some bling 8) ) from Merlin's sale wheels section. I just hope I can stand the free hub noise although after looking on YouTube I think i'd prefer it over the Chris King noise!!
