Hi quick bit about me, I have been cycling recreationally and as part of training for another sport for around 5 years now. Currently own a Ridgeback Genesis (converted from flat bar to drop) which I use for getting about, training/leisure rides and have toured abroad on. This is now going to be made my commuting hack/winter bike and I'm going to get something shiny & carbon.
I am looking at getting a base spec Orbea Onix and fitting a 2008 spec Ultegra group set + FSA crank and selling the Tiagra stuff that is fitted as standard. This works out to around £1500-1600. However how does the 2008 Ultegra compare to the current 105 groupset? Or does anyone know how it will compare to the new 105 groupset about to be released? Onix with 105 currently costs £1500 hence the comparison.
Sorry for the ramblings and thanks for any help, very useful forum!
Cheers, Rob.

Having ridden with both Ultegra and 105, the Ultegra is definately smoother and lighter, but not to the point of breaking the bank for it. A well set up 105 is still very good. My mate runs the 6700 Ultegra and reckons thats loads better than the sl version but i would again suggest that depends on money! Good luck!Another tree...another cracked rib!!0

I've got last years Onix Bira (105). Bike is amazing and I can't really fault the performance of the 105 componentry, its just ugly!!
It seems like everyone, whether they are spending £500 or £5000, is content for about a week and then starts lookin at upgrades so maybe there is some sense in doing it from the outset....
