Anyone know if you can still get an garmin edge 205? (other than ebay) - most places say discontinued - Handtec web sites states they are taking pre orders - but how can they when it is being phased out ?

someone has just lent me his 205 forerunner. For what it's worth from using it for about a week and a half, it seems to have quite a few drop outs from satellite signal so you get some weird elevation and grade readings, one ride along a pan flat coast road gives an average height of about 75ft with notable variations along the way (and believe me, that road is pan flat and virtually sea level). The speed reading, however, seems fairly accurate. Over the course of a ride all this averages out but comparing it with a mates 500 it seems like it's either a case of stumping up the extra for a 500 or saving money and getting a cheap one secondhand. I'm going to save up my paper round money for a 500

GPS elevation is inaccurate. The 500 has a barometric altimeter.

What is the difference between the 500 and the 205 - does it still do routes via a breadcumb trail & virtual pacer ?

The 500 is more like the 305 as you can add speed/cadence and HR. Its also ANT+ so will work with power meters. I think the 500 will allow you to follow a breadcrumb trail - my Forerunner 310xt does and it's pretty similar to the 500.

Are you looking for something to train with, something to navigate with or both?

If you still want a 205 you can get them from Ribble or the heart rate monitor shop and probably several other places.
