What is the going rate for pocket money these days?

We suggested £2 a week to our daughter, who has just turned 6, and she came back with a counter-offer of £2.50  .

Can we tax her?

Her counter-offer is subject to negotiation. What is she prepared to do for the50p bonus?

Tell her she's adopted from Eastern Europe, and pay her as little as possible

My daughter's 7 and gets up to a fiver a week.

She has a star chart with 5 stars per day over 7 days for various tasks / behaviours each day. If she does the task (clearing table, tidying up etc etc) or meets the behaviour (not being asked twice, goes to bed without complaint etc) then she gets a star.

At the end of the week she gets 10p per star, with a £1.50 bonus if she has a full 35 stars.

Works a treat but costs me a flamin' fortune because she's stopped being cheeky and started to help a hell of a lot more than I expected lol.

Oh well, makes for an easier life.

I used to get 1 quid a week off my nanna.

Yep thank God for Nanna's - mine used to top up the pocket money I got as a kid and throw in biscuits, sweets and the best chips I've ever tasted.

I used to get 30p a week and blow it every Friday on a 29p Kalkitos rub-on transfer thingy - usually Dinosaurs or Planes. Heady days indeed !

Any more than a quid or two for that age group is teaching the wrong thing. I'd much rather give a treat than paying up for them doing chores for mummy and daddy.

Oh. My. God! KALKITOS! I'd totally forgotten about them. Sigh, where has my childhood gone? Thanks for the memories.

I used to blow my pocket money on "Battle", "Action", and "2000A.D."

My older boy is 9 and gets about a pound fifty a week.

Going off topic but I'd forgotten about those !

Crikey, memories of "Hook Jaw" & "Hellman of Hammer Force" !!!

Battle & Action merged IIRC, then my favourite strip was "Johnny Red".

    My brother got 2000AD.

    Anyhow, back on topic...

£2 each for my 10 and 8 yr old boys - generally immediately blow the lot on "Match Attax" or "Adrenalin XL" football cards.

Now have approx 35 million of the f*****g things in the house :)

£2 it is. I'm not going to enter negociations with a 6-year old! :D I assumed that she might want to buy a 'Hello Kitty' comic once in a while, or save up for some Build-a-Bear clothes (teddy bear clothes). She tells me she's saving for a Wii and some Lelli Kelly shoes.

My little nephew from Slovakia (4 years old) threw a massive tantrum the other day because his Mum wouldn't take him to Paris.

I would have paid to see that.

My 7 and 5 year get one pound a week each. They can earn more by doing odd jobs like cleaning bikes!

2000 AD - ah happy memories and Space Dust that fizzed in your mouth!

You'll have UNISON on your back if you aren't careful - equal pay for equal jobs and all that

My older daughter will claim she doesn't get pocket money - she conveniently forgets the fact it costs us about £300 per month to keep her bloody horse

My 6 year old gets £2. Neither of them appear to do anything in return for their payment, bit like me and my job really

Used to get 25p a day, except on Sundays. At 13 I got a paper round and was paid £3.25 a week, took on 2 rounds and was paid £5.00 a week - seemed like a fortune! I don't recall what I spent my money on, wouldn't have been computer games, we pirated them  must have been 3 1/2 inch floppies and sweets.

I didn't get pocket money as a kid but did a paper round delivering a free paper and got paid 1p for each of the 250 papers I delivered each week. Saved up for a disgusting yellow jumper and a nylon ski jacket (it was the 80's in my defence!).

I did a paper round for 3 years. I was given the 'posh' area, where everyone had broad sheets, plus the FT, and TV & Radio Times on a Wednesday. It was so heavy I had to do it in 3 goes. The upside was at Christmas, I'd get over £100 in tips. I'm sure carrying that load on my right shoulder/left hip is the root of all my lower back problems today!

My money went on vinyl records and breakdancing clothes (oh the shame  ). I did have a lovely Kappa jacket though. 8)
