Eventful trip which started with my mate filing the diesel van with petrol and an interesting night in Neath workies after getting soaked on Whites Level on Friday

Did most of the W2 on Sat but was forced to limp home via the energy when my poxy chain snapped - managed to get it back together but could not stomp the pedals for fear of it coming apart again!

And managed the 6km climb in 32.30 - still had more in the tank and reckon sub 30 is within my grasp....

And the downhills...wow...love em

Didn't have spare power links? Live and learn.

Sounds like you had a good time though, the trails are quite nice there.

    Gotta love Afan :o

I had my chain snap on the whites route and didn't have any means of repairing the chain, luckily some friendly bikers offered to fix it for me within half hour. I never had the confidence in the quickly removed and fixed link but being skint it's still on there after a good few rides out :P

Went to afan for the first time on Friday absolutely awesome, rode Whites Level it was a massive step up in quality from my usual ride at Twrch Trail Cwmcarn. Will have to get a few more rides in and have a crack at your time for the climb :x . Thinking of returning in a few weeks and riding the wall heard it is fantastic. Special mention to the drop off cafe had the best Lasagne ever proper portion size aswell

I quite like the twrch trail but I think I do prefer Afan.

The climb times of me and my buddies were after a massive jaegerbomb session on Friday night - am sure that's not ideal preparation. Maybe as a leveller, if you are going to beat my time...you have to sink a few the day before

I managed to fix the chain with a link extractor but can't believe how weak SRAM chains are once you've done that. Defo will get a powerlink for the future.

    Was a great weekend!

To be honest i think technically Cwm is a far more challenging trail than anything afan has, though i love the wall proper fast. (these all being fairly local to me)

I'm spending 3 days at Afan this weekend - it'll be my first time. The weather forecast looks damn nice too - I can't wait. Some of the trails start from the campsite, so it'll be straight out the sleeping bag, and onto the bike.

I love climbing hard, and descending hard (so does my Cove Stiffee), so I reckon all the routes will suit me. The W2 looks quite savage. 44km for a Black Run

I wonder if we'll end up getting drunk and doing a night ride !! (mountain rescue anyone? )

So which sections are the infamous downhills I've read about, particularly on the W2 route ?

And what's the name of this 6km climb - will I find it easily on the map ?
