Bike suggestions <£150

Hi,
My brother wants to get a bike to commute locally (he won't do more then 10 miles a day). He's more or less a beginner and wants to buy a bike under £150. I've advised him to get a hybrid or a rigid MTB. We settled that he shouldn't get rear suspension. He needs the bike to be smooth and easy to ride.
I've been road biking for sometime now and therefore I am not 'in the know' re MTBs or hybrids. I do use an MTB for commuting which is a Claud Butler Mercury and I love it. Are there any decent bikes out there that can compete with my claud butler, but still be within his £150 price range?
Any suggestions?
Many thanks.

With that kind of budget I would be looking at decathlon if you have one near by. They have a range of MTB's and Hybrids for under £150.

WIth some decent tyres I reckon either of these would be ok for a small commute.0 -

for £150 either go second hand or dont bother the cheap models are dangerous and wont last five minutes proper mountainbiking.0

Have a look for a Kona Smoke second hand. Bullet proof steel frame and great fun to ride. The stock bike comes with decent mudguards as well.
There's a 20" on eBay now for £125, so might finish within spitting distance of £150.Bike/Train commuter: Brompton S2L - "Machete"
12mile each way commuter: '11 Boardman CX with guards and rack
For fun: '11 Wilier La Triestina
SS: '07 Kona Smoke with yellow bits0 -
Over budget, but there are brand new kona smokes on ebay for 200 notes:
