What wheel set to get.

I managed to wreck my front wheel yesterday and so need some advice on what replacement to get. I have looked online and got confused due to teh wide selection available.

My bike is a Specialized Rock Hopper and had the standard wheel set on. I am not a heavy rider, or at least I dont think I am, under 12 stone. I normally ride on xc trails no really big jumps, maybe 1 foot at most.

Would be good to get a few suggestions so that I can choose between them but also different prices so I can see the difference if I spend a little more.

Thanks

  • I think your best bet is to give a max budget... then we have an idea of how much!

Also, you just looking for a front or for both wheels?

I am just looking for a front wheel. As for budget, I do not want to spend huge amounts, I have seen some for a few hundred. But If I can see that wheel is better then I do not mind spending more. I guess maybe a hundred as a ball park max figure but please dont rule out ones more than that if they are significantly better. I guess value for money is more important to me than actual cost.

    Merlin Cycles.

Mavic XC717 rim on XT 6-bolt front hub.

    Jobs a goodun.

Under a hundred quid and a good wheel.

Stans 355 rims + DT Comp spokes + Pro 2 hubs are what I'd go for.

Cheaper than the above after postage costs (assuming black DT Comp spokes + black rim)
    Lighter
    More expensive/wider/lighter rim
Fit and forget - no faffing needed to tighten cones
    Easily converted to tubeless

and the only drawbacks of loud/cheese freewheel Hopes don't apply to the front. Don't Merlin still use old, heavier 765 hubs for their 6 bolt options?

Merlin use the M756 (latest) hub. Not the M765 unless stated so.

However the Pro II option is a good deal.

I just like Shimano hubs out of preferrence.

That pic reminds me, I would say the XT come with a really good QR though on the plus side :) Hope don't, and it costs quite a lot to get their own one, although you can obviously use your last one.

There happens to be a discussion about Hope/XT pros/cons over at Singletrack at the mo:

M765 is an older splined hub and is 180g. The 756 is the 6 bolt hub, and is quite a bit heavier and I think officially discontinued.

    Latest is the 775 splined.

You sure it's discontinued SS? Sure they aren't, they haven't been around for that long.

Its the same series line as the 776 just splined.

    Thats what I think anyhoo.....

I did wonder, they didn't have the 756 on the Shimano website but you still see them selling. Looks like they've not been updated, but do still sell.

Was thinking the same thing, had those very same hubs on my 08 GT Force....

Is the only 6 bolt XT hubs around, and were so many made. But incredibly heavy lol. The Deore at the time was actually lighter lol. That said they are tough as old boots and reliability wise seem to top the XTs.
