Looking for new cranks/chainset. £200-300 give or take. Its for a titanium build so a bit of bling wouldn't go amiss :)

Riding is local wooded singletrack and occasional trips to the Peaks and Wales, XC type stuff. Would also prefer a double and bash set up and lightweight would be good too. Not after much am I lol

Noticed Shimano SLX M665 double n bash on CRC for £90. Anyone using it?

Any ideas/ recommendations welcome

Cheers

I'm not using it anymore, I swapped mine for a raceface Atlas AM chainset, but the SLX is a VERY good choice.

With a budget of £200-£300 maybe consider something like a Truvativ Noir XC 3.3 Carbon they have the gold version at Merlin

You could then replace the big ring with something like a raceface light bashring if you want a double.

Do you have a specific colour in mind?

    Cheers for that CWNT

That Truvativ Noir looks a a good deal, well spotted :)

Don't have a particular colour in mind as such though the gold one does look good. Nice and light too.

Definitely worth considering anyway and like you say no problem swapping the big ring for a bash guard.

Well, I may have neglected to mention, it may not be as straight forward as simply swapping the big ring out for a bash to be fair.

You'd probably want to change the remaining rings to something like 24-36 or you'll probably find yourself running out of gears on flat/downhill sections. Obviously that all costs extra money.

Still do-able for under £300 though.

i am using the SLX double, which replaced my cheap truvative 3 rings. i found its a good choice for general mountain biking as I rarely use the 42 ring in the trail.

IF you are going for some racy xc type, i wouldn't recommand though. cuz the bash guard adding more weight to it in the first place, also 36ring is not big enough for racing i think.

however, if just for a fun ride and want to advanture some rough stuff one feels like to, SLX would be perfect

I'm running a 22-36 on my full sus at the mo and happy with that configuration so for a few extra pennies to convert the Truvativ Noir to a similar set up isn't a problem.

Armymankin, the SLX is very tempting as well if not because it seems a real bargain at that price, just feel I want to do this build justice with some lighter blingy type stuff on it, ok ok I'm a bike tart I own up :)

What colour's the rest of the build? Very important for bling reasons
Black goes with everything - and the SLX is brilliant value for money, at the other end of the scale the truvative is a racelight crankset and would look equaly brilliant.

XT doesn't offer many benefits over SLX... but there is a bit more of a bling factor - but think about it like this, money saved on cranks can be spent on tarting up other areas :D

Torres, at the mo have black rims, handlebars and stem. And if I go for the Truvative noir in gold was thinking of XO shifters and rear mech in gold too.

Your right that SLX is brill for the money and would free up cash for other areas and extra blingyness hmmm decisions :)

    Cheers for the input fellas

Pricey, but it's what all the cool kids are running at the moment......

    Don't listen to the nay-sayers!

Got one of the best weight:rigidity ratios out there...

    CWNT :D

Coupled with a gold KMC chain too..... Blimey, think I'd need shades on just fixing it all to the bike! lol

    Totally unsure now! :)
Pity they don't do it as a double ring set up as well as the three ring one
Thanks for that suggestion anyway..... Think I'm going to have to sleep on this one!

    what r u looking for?

just ride around for fun? === SLX
if for racing performance... then go allllll the way, sram XX, if you insist on a double. besides, double set up is a sensible set up for racing.

if you have £300 budget and not looking for into any race, i would get the SLX, then use the money to get a decent pair of brakes, which is what I did
