I've been using my Garmin 305 Edge since last summer but I've never fitted the Cadence device that came with it.

Should I add it and what are the benefits?

Being able to monitor your cadence during the ride is (the only?) main benifit

Its a speed/cadence sensor so it also allows you to use your Edge on an indoor trainer (and provides speed if you lose GPS signal under trees or around buildings).
    More problems but still living....

Sorry  my fault for not making it clear. I know what the Cadence sensor can measure, my question was mean to ask is there a benefit to know my cadence?

Rightly or wrongly I just go out and look to improve my average mph over a given route. If I monitor my cadence and make the necessary changes (whatever they are, hence the question) am I likely to improve my average speed?

There's a belief that everyone has an optimal cadence. It may help you work out what this is.

I've found my cadence sensor to be priceless. Now I've found my "sweet spot" I find riding so much easier, I know which gear I'm in depending on my speed/cadence and I can adjust easier depending on wind, hills, etc.
