I had a laptop which decided to die on me and I have removed the hard drive to try and extract files from it, i purchased a hard drive docking station to connect the hard drive to my new laptop, i can now access the hard drive but cannot open any of my documents.
I get a message stating that i dont have permission to access the folder
how can i gain access?

I had a similar thing happen - sorry I can't remember how I solved it - not much help I know but at least it might reassure you that there is some kind of solution even if you don't know what it is !

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

Right click on the documents then click properties, then click on security tab, who is the owner of it?

Try the change the ownership of the file and make sure you are logged into an account with Administrator privileges.

Thanks Will, how can i tell who is the owner? By doing what you have said I get a list of usernames and a list of permissions below, is the name at the top of the list the owner of the file?

    What OS you on?

In the "Permissions for *username*" box below, what does it have ticked?

Click advanced, then owner tab, then click on edit.

And there should be some user names under the "Change owner to:" box.
