Anyone care to rate the hills in this years Giro/TDF?

The wife and I were sat on the sofa last night watching the Giro and she asked me when the 'big hill' stages started. This led eventually to a discussion about which of the climbs in the Giro were the hardest and whether they were harder than the ones in this years TDF. Having never ridden any of them I had to admit that I didn't really know other than to say that generally the HC's are harder than the 1st cats which are harder than etc. etc..

Anyone care to put them into descending order of difficulty?

It's pretty safe to say that the Giro usually has much more difficult climbs in terms of both steepness and length.

Riding a mountain in the Tour is probably still more difficult however, since the quality of the field you are racing with is usually higher.

    A good resource is http://www.climbbybike.com

They give ratings (from an equation) and show details of loads of climbs around the world.

Here's how they rate the top climbs for this year's races (higher number = harder climb)

    203.28 GDI St.15 Zoncolan
    199.21 GDI St.19 Mortirolo
    182.05 GDI St.14 Monte Grappa
    172.49 GDI St.20 Gavia
    163.49 TDF St.18 Tourmalet
151.42 TDF St.17 Tourmalet (the other side)
    148.08 GDI St.16 Kronplatz
142.91 TDF St.10 Col de la Madelaine
    132.32 GDI St.17 Passo Palade
126.03 TDF St.16 Port de Bales
124.97 TDF St.15 Col de Paileres
124.94 TDF St. 10 Col de Colombiere

The 'superstars', not in the Tour this year: Alpe d'Huez - 140.64, Mont Ventoux - 176.11

  • Don't they also rate the climbs in terms of where they come in a stage? So an easier climb might get a higher rating then a harder one if it comes at the end of a long stage?

Surprised to see the Pailheres higher than the Aubisque. Pailheres is only really tough right at the top, but has a long wind up.

The Aubisque is a little more straightforward.

That's only for the "catagory" rating for the actual stage (HC, 1st, 2nd, etc)

The ratings used by Rich just look at the figures for the climb and rate them like that.

Wow that's a great site Rick thanks, just the kind of thing I was looking for.

Of course I realise that climbs are harder depending on where they come in the stage and depending on the quality of the field etc. but it's nice to have some kind of absolute benchmark.
