Shimano Alivio for Budget DJ Bike

I'm building a cheap dirt jump bike from a frame that i've acquired. Would the Shimano Alivio chainset do for it? I'd take two of the chainrings off and just use the middle one. Would it be strong enough?
Never put off until tomorrow something that you can do today. 'Cause if you do it today, and like it, the you can do it again tomorrow!!
