Are going to get bent over and well and truly shafted. and I hope they do.
Just seen the BP guy in court and he was SH*TTING himself! They are being told they have to cover EVERY claim that can be related to the spill.
Cleanup, Jobs, Taxes.... you name it.

Years and years of raking multiple billion $ profits will take care of that.0
-
they're thinking of capping the liability at $100bn... as its currently $75million.
TBH there shouldnt be a cap!0 -
who will be paying for it in the end though....us at the pumps?0
-
Feels like we are already tbh...0

Another week or so and I'm thinking I might buy a few shares in BP. Let the price bottom out, then watch them grow...0

Yeah, £1.24.9 on the way home last night!
Its terrible to realise how much money these companies rake it. As pointed out by bails87, 8% of profit for 3 months of this year is staggering.0 -
On the radio yesterday there was an oil analyst saying that the total cost of clearup and compensation could wipe out one year of BP's profits. The daily clean up costs are huge but equated to only just shy of the entire cost of running the home office int he UK or something - just goes to show the balance of power between governments and corporations.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0

Ill keep this quote on save for when you start complaining about the rise in fuel prices if they do have to pay for it all ! :twisted:0 -
So if i say I end up having a depression due to the fact that i heard about the BP oil spilt and got so upset about the surrounding environment, is that mean I can claim for £15,000 as compensation?"It is not impossible, its just improbable"

But will the other oil companies keep they're prices (relatively) low, so BP lose out, meaning they have to keep their prices where they are?
Also, I'm glad a British company is doing well. People always moan about the economy being rubbish and having no good companies, but when Tesco or BP actually make money, the same people complain :?0 -
If BP hike up their prices, the other oil companies will see that as a chance to a$$ rape us even more and put up their prices to match. They will use it as an excuse to make more profit!
I am also concerned about the potential for a rise in fuel duty prices with the emergency budget!!!Ride it like you stole it!0 -
To be honest we all have a go at the oil companies and so on for prices and all but most of the current prices we pay are tax and duties.
BP generally have high working practices and when things go wrong it is rare but it happenes and when its oil( A not really very pleasent material) we have problems.
I'm with you Bails on this people just want to moan at them, We pretty much pay more tax and duty on fuel than the rest of europe but we have lower income tax than most, take your pick0 -

Income tax is fairer. But actually fuel, especially diesel, was more expensive in France and Belgium than here when I was there about 9 months ago.0 -
I'm talking most of europe.. France belgium are the wierd bits of europe.
Denmark was cheaper when i was there recently, Greece, Germany.
The americans have it really great for fuel prices although the fuel they get is heavily diluted with mud i'm pretty sure0 -

Fair enough, I haven't been to the other bits of Europe lately.
And yeah, I remember when Americans were moaning that petrol had hit $1 a gallon, around the same time as we were paying £1/litre and £1 = $2. Would that make it 9 times as expensive here?!0 -
Yup but as i said it is part mud,
a few years back the most powerful scooby you get for instance was american import, as it had a bigger engine that was tuned to run on the 90 octane junk they have... brought it over here and put 97-99octane in and it was wet you pants bonkers0 -
The oil companies make barely any profit from petrol. I think it averages out at about 1p a litre. The majority of oil they get out of the ground is sold off to be made into plastics, and other types of fuel. Petrol and diesel are not on their list of priorities.
I can't see petrol going up that much really, as it won't make any difference to them.It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

I like Clarkson's take on the oil price from an episode of Top Gear a while back.
The fact that they can drill the oil out of the ground, refine it, ship it/pipe it across hundreds to thousands of miles and then drive it to the filling stations, all for less than a pound per litre (ok its more now but its still a valid point) is actually very very good.
And the fact that the majority of the price is tax makes it even better.
I laugh at all the "lets not buy from BP, Esso garages for a month" groups claiming that instead we should buy from Tesco and Saisbury's etc who get their fuel from these companies anyway so it wont make the slightest bit of difference.
The people we need to complain at are the Government (and car manufactures for not making the cars more efficient)0 -

Absolutely. You can pay more for a litre of water. It stings when your car only does 18mpg though.. It's just what we're used to really. And the fact thaat the structure of our civilisation relies heavilly on the internal combustion engine.
It's insane how little the oil companies make on it when you subtract everything else, but I'm sure they still make a pretty penny purely down to the unthinkable quantities sold.0 -
THEKICKINGMULE
You are right in saying that its only 1p a litre they make, the staff discount at BP petrol stations is equal to their profit, 1p a litre, mate of mine who works in strategy at BP still buys his fuel from wherever is cheapest as its all the same stuff.whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons0 -
I think in the very near future our petrol prices in france are going to hit 1.50 euros a literI assume this is French petrol - be careful in reverse - the car will retreat rapidly at the least provocation.0
