Upgrading advice

Hi all, i am bought a GT avalanche 1.0 (2008) last year, i am thinking of upgrading the components. I am thinking of purchasing a shimano SLX group set with wheels. Should i invest in a new bike or just go ahead with the upgrade?

    instead of upgrading groupset your bike would benifit more from a new fork say a tora which is more or less the same price

    wiggle have the tora 318 u turn which i have on my bike, for about 170 i think. was an OE model, disc only, but runs lovely, and is super smooth

    (just looked, they are £230 now, but amazing forks :)
