It depends on the chainset you are fitting.
The shell width, if using a cartridge type BB is the width of the bottom bracket shell on the bike.0 -
At the moment its an unbranded square taper chainset.. might be a suntour0

Most possibly a 113, but without knowing the model cannot say for sure.0

The shimano cartridge BBs normally have the width printed on them. Have you removed it yet? No sure about other brands, but you won't see until you've removed it.
Failing that, take it into the local LBS and I'm sure they'll identfy it.0 -
No i purchased a frame from ebay - Kona Five o- but it has no bottom bracket fitted. the shell width is 73mm but how do you work out the spindle width to get the correct chainline from the rear axle/sprocket to the chainset?0

it depends on what cranks you are fitting. so you need to identify it or buy one and hop it is correct or get your LBS to sort it.
but 113 tends to be a fairly common size but......."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I was sort of hoping there was a formula or method of calculating it, so for example do truvative, shimano & raceface use set width spindles?
And i have read that correct chainline is an important factor how would you check that this is correct, does the angle/line have to be taken from a particular sprocket to a particular chainring?
quite keen to find out how this is done, my LBS cn't explain it to me.0
