Traveling to France for the Marmotte

Hi all,
I'm flying into Lyon for the Marmotte. I'm staying for 8 days, arriving on the Saturday before hand & flying back out the Sunday the day after. I'm debating whether to hire a car for the week (cheapest cost was €230) or get the train to Grenoble & then bus onto Bourg D'oisans. This works out a lot cheaper, about €55 for the train & bus....
I'm wondering has anyone travelled this route before by train/bus with a bike & how did they find it?
Thanks,

Get a train from Lyon to Grenoble. Then at the Grenoble bus station they have busses to B d'O. I did this in 2006 for the Marmotte and Etape.
When I have some time i'll find you the bus links. It's surprisingly good. socialist country and all so lots of "peoples' busses"When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.0 -
Done that journey many times... bus will take bikes as luggage no problem and is cheap and reliable, about €7 each way as I recall, one every 2 hours and takes about an hour and a half. Company is called VFD."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Cheers lads, I'm flying back the Sunday afternoon from Lyon at 16:40 the day after the Marmotte. That's my biggest gripe about getting the bus/train. I reckon I'll be knackered & it could be hassel lugging a bike around...0

i've just decided i want to do it in 2011 but know nothing about it really so a few basic tips would be appreciated.
would driving down with a bike rack be easily doable?
where's the best place to stay? am i right in thinking that the start and finish aren't too far apart?
how difficult is getting accomodation and when would i need to be looking at booking?
how do i enter the event? i cant find an official site on google
cheers

gsk82,
I'm sure I've read the info on other threads but briefly
Driving down is doable, bout 10hrs from Calais.
I stayed on top of Alp d'Huez, got tio book early. Start at base of Alp, finish on top and a small matter of 100 miles and 3 very large Cols imbetween.
Have a look at www.sportcommunication.info entries open end of November early December of the previous year
Hope that helps
PS. It's a fantastic event, start training and you should love it0
