Hi,

I am not an experianced rider, but i am planning to bike from Lands End to John O'groats....I have been looking around at many bikes and dont have a clue what to go for (i am looking to do it all as cheaply as possilbe.

Would th Dawes Giro 300 be a good/good enough bike to do it on? Does anyone have any comments on this bike?

Many thanks for you help.

How old is your Dawes Giro 300? The older ones were really very nice. The newer ones are ok, but not as nice. I'd say you'd be ok either way, but you might favour a bike with a compact or triple if you are buying new (I'd stretch to the Dawes Sportif if I could and were buying new).
  • i had a dawes giro 300 and it was excellent ! no issues whatsoever .
  • my Dawes Giro 400 is OK. I now know more and reckon I could have bought a better bike for the money. Not sure about the 300, but can't put a rack on the 400. I'd only consider it if you are staying in B&B/hostels and so just need to carry a change of clothes (saddlebag + bar bag). If you are planning on camping then I don't think the Giro will be suitable to carry that much stuff.

I have just recently been told that as dawes is a small english company i could find a better bike for the same amount of money, is this a fair comment?

    If so...what should i get?

The old Dawes Giros were ideal starter bikes, one of our club members still rides one, he puts a rack on when touring and strips it down to the basic bike for Sunday rides. The more recent ones look like they only come with a double chainset and do not appear to have braze-ons to take a rack.

Dawes are not like the mighty Giant (or example), but they still make some of the best tourers on the market and tend to be good value.

However if you are looking for a do everything bike on a budget you would not go far wrong with a bike from Edinburgh Cycles. They do their own range called the revolution range and always get a good right up in terms of value for money. They do touring machines but also a revolution Cross, http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLq ... 155c018341 which depending on which tyres you put on will happily do touring or day rides and with the right tyres will even go off road. At £400 it looks very good value for money.
