Shimano RS80 Wheels

Hi,
I am thinking of upgrading my road wheels. The budget is around £400. I currently have a pair of Bontrager Race Lite (08) wheels which have served me well and are the standard wheels the bike come with.
I mainly ride Sportives so need help all the help I can get for climbing hills. If anyone has had a set of the Shimano RS80 wheels and can offer an advice or feedback I would appreciate it.
Any suggesting with regards to alternatives (Shimano hub, clinchers) would be most welcome.
Thanks

I have the dura ace 7850 carbon laminate wheels, which I gather are the same rims as the rs80. they are great wheels - nice and light, and strong to boot.
that said, i also have a set of pro lite braccianos - they are now £249.99 rrp, and they are almost as light as my dura ace wheels. they are hand built and also proving strong and reliable - if the budget is £400, i'd go for the braccianos and then spend a bit on some nice light tyres to go with them.0 -
Yeah same rim I believe, I've had mine since the start of this season, can't fault them.
Still true (I've hit some massive holes and mis-timed a bunny hop which gave the rear a good old slam into the kerb - I apologised to the wheel out loud) Fairly light, haven't had to touch them spoke wise and they roll very nicely. They do seem to pick up cross-winds though? Not sure if that's just me and what I've changed from and to?
VFM I'd also say they were very good. Oh, the quick releases aren't the most stylish/lightest.Thresholds, 60-80%, HRM's...I'll just go for a ride0 -
I spent months looking at wheelsets in this price range!!. Researching and reading review after review of Bontrager, Mavic, Shimano, Easton, Ritchey and DT Swiss. I decided to go for the RS80 based on two things; the claimed weight and the fact they are almost exactly the same wheel as the Dura Ace 7850 equivalent.
I've had them on my bike for a year now, mainly riding sportives and weekend rides. Never had any issue with them. I pushed them fairly hard to begin with the test if there was any flex, absolutely nothing.
They are still arrow straight, smooth and awesome to climb on. I upgraded from shimano r500's so the jump was noticeable in quality.
In the end i decided to go for these instead of DT 1450, because they were just too far out of my price range.
Hope this helps.0 -
i have put these on my bike recently and am liking them. However, quick question.
They came with what I believe is a spoke magnet? How do you fit this? Seems to twist on, but does it stay put? Looks like it would eject at the first whiff of a pot hole.
Thks.Rich0 -
Is it worth upgrading and cost effective from PX B's to RS80's, Pro Bracianos or 7850 CL?0

If it is anything like the DA one it pushes on. One thing to note is that I think I lost mine cleaning the bike.0

Seems to be push on from the side and twist round. Its more that it looks like it is easy on and therefore easy off at the first sign of a bump. (And we hardly have the best roads!)Rich0 -
I got a pair of these last year for my wife to replace Bontrager Race Lights that she'd worn out. She's tiny, so they made a big difference to her, particularly climbing. I tried them on my bike, replacing Mavic Aksiums and they made a noticeable difference, fast off from a standing start and also climbing. They will not increase your overall speed, that's down to you, but they'll make you feel good trying.
The jury is still out for me for what I might upgrade to later this year but with your budget you ought to look at Merlin and you could also include a good pair of tyres within budget.0
