Following criticism of the first 3 days of riding in the Netherlands the Giro organisers have issued a statement:

"In response to critics of this year's route we have decided to introduce new plans for next year. The first day will remain as a TT over 5.5km but will now take place on the moon. As organisers, our primary concern is for the safety of the riders. As such it is felt that the surface of our only natural satellite provides the ideal location for a more gentle introduction to a three week stage race. The sandy lunar surface is relatively soft and although there are no roads this means there is no road furniture for riders to hit. Furthermore, since the gravitational pull of the planet is a mere one sixth of that found on Earth if anyone does fall off this will give time for the moto GP to get shots as they descend slowly to the floor rather than arriving late and missing it."

The statement concludes; " Due to the travel time involved between the moon and Italy the following day will be a rest day. This will be followed by a return to normal racing where we expect most of the riders to be on their arses by the end of the next stage".
