Old Shimano 600/7400 vs newer Sora/Tiagra 8 speed

Hi,

I'm building up a steel frame bike using an old 2007 Sora/Tiagra groupset I took off my Spesh Allez. I'm trawling Ebay for some other parts such as seatposts and bars, and I made the mistake of searching for 'Shimano 8 speed'.

Obviously loads of old Dura-Ace and Ultegra came up, but since I don't NEED any of the parts, would there be any significant performance improvements buying new derailleurs and/or shifters, or would they be pretty much the same as what I've already got?

Cheers!

I would rate late model 600/7400 components to be at 105-level, if they are in good condition. I would certainly prefer them over Sora. 2007 tiagra is pretty good. What parts are currently Sora, the shifters?

Shifters and front mech are Sora, rear mech is Tiagra. Obviously the 600 shifters are in the style of nicer Shimano stuff, the question is other than not having the thumb button, are 600 shifters that much better, as they are obviously fairly dear even off eBay!

Whether they are 'much' better depends on how much you dislike the button and how well your Sora shifters are performing. Some people have bad experiences with them and others have great experiences.

Personally I would just use the Sora/Tiagra set for now and save up for a new Tiagra 9 speed group.

Keep what you have until it wears out then replace/upgrade then.

No point replacing good working stuff unless you are a proper bike tart
