Very similar to the 540 pedal I think, just a bit more expensive for XT written on the side :P

Still use cheap 520s here, there's about 4-5 sets of them kicking around the house I think now, I'll give some 540s a try next though I think :) Exactly the same mechanism to the 520s, but a bit lighter and easier to get into to regrease.

Using Specialized BG Sport shoes, I'm on my second pair now, the first ones lasted over well over 2 years though, to be honest they still work now but the velcro belts are getting a bit battered.

If it's your first set then get some 520s, they can be had for £15-£20 off Ebay including cleats - I've had mine for about 4 or 5 years, they are on their 3rd bike! I've also got Spesh BG shoes, I've got the ones with the ratchet& velcro - good sohes. Either get Spesh or Shimano, whiich ever fits u best.

I'd go with 520's too. I've broken a couple with rock/tree stump strikes and they're much cheaper to replace!

I had the m20's as my first SPD nad they were very easy to get on with, but didn't last too well (but I do a lot of miles in all conditions).
I've got XT's on two bikes now, done over 1k miles on one of the sets and I've not had to even service them.

I've got three sets of M520's on various bikes.

Bad luck, both times it was the underside of the pedal that hit a rock/tree stump and bent the spring. I tried everything to sort them and even took them to the LBS but they said no chance of sorting it :? They still worked but only one side had any tension.

But only £20 to replace!

Good going, I used to think I'd broken them every time I smacked them into a rock at speed. I've pretty much come to accept their indestructibility these days.
