Magura Julie brakes dragging

My son’s Spesh Hardrock Disc has the older style of Magura Julie disc brakes. They’re twin-pot and don’t feature a return spring at the pads (like my XT discs do). I’ve cleaned them many times, and pushed the pistons back into the callipers and freed them off, but they always drag badly. Now he’s off to Oz for a year’s travelling, his bike’s back in my shed and I note that they’ve almost seized up. So I’ve some time to get them sorted prior to his return. Any idea what I could do to fix and improve ‘em. New seal kit maybe. Or do I just accept that they’re crap brakes, and always will be, and look towards a complete replacement?
Any advice readily considered.

It is the seals on the pistons that return them - they may be knackered or dirty.0
