Not been the best week of MTBing for me. On Thursday morning I went out at 6am before work as I often do. Started climbing the south downs....steep bit...gave it the beans...SNAP. There goes the chain. B0llocks.
Then manage to snap my link extractor....so have a 4 mile scoot home. Pop to Halfrauds to get a new chain. Bloke asks if I would like him to pop it on. Yeah, why not. It's only a power link...how hard can it be? Bloke breaks one chain....and bins it (Am scratching my head by this point)...then puts another on. And tries to charge me £10 fitting fee. For attaching a power link. Argument ensues.....bloke eventually backs down and then tells me he is not a mechanic anyway. So WTF are you fiddling with my bike for then?
Anyway - Take new chain home. fit myself, notice tyre is a litle worn looking but should last a few more rides.
Turn up to Duncton Trailbreak on Sat....start off fine. 10 miles in, spongey back end. Tubeless tyre is pissing sealant everywhere....not able to seal the half inch GASH that some flint has just put in it. B0llocks again. So fit the tube that I have with me...set off again. 5 miles further in...big descent, couple of bumps. Back end all over the shop. At exactly the same time both myself and a mate blow out big time. His missus has "borroweed" his tube. My tube has a split the size of a barge in it. I am down to 1 puncture kit. The other two lads we were with disappear into the distance. Mobile blackspot...so no reception to call them. They carry on to the finish assuming all is ok. Manage just to seal my mates tube in the rain....but there was no way I am going to repair mine...
Manage to stop a passing rider on a Spesh....didn't get the chaps name but a massive thank you to him for giving me a tube and not even wanting any dosh for it. You saved me from a very long walk (potentially for for the second time in a week!). Thank you so much mate!
Limp around the rest of the course trying to avoid pinch flats, flints, sharp objects and eventually finish at least 1 hour after we planned....
Get home, spend 2 hours cleaning and giving the bike TLC.
Today....pop out. 20 great miles, no issues, no rain...massive smile again.
Funny ol' game, innit?

I had a bit of one of those days too.....first my bloomin chain fell off when going uphill, cue me nearly going over the bars .....then me bloomin handlebars had come loose so they spun round too !...that'll teach me not to check the bolts again  ...good job I had a tool kit with me.
Things we do for fun
