Hiya,
Replacing some tyres on an old shopper, got conti gator skins in 26x1 1/4, old ones were 26x1 3/4.
I cannot get even the first bead of the conti onto the rim, when I've got about 2/3 of the bead on , the rest is a good 2" away from the rim. I've even called in reinforcements (my brother) and he can't do it either.
Am I being an idiot? I've heard that contis can be a total mare... Are there different varieties of 26" tyre?

Unfortunately, yes, there are varieties of 26" tyre.
The most common are mountain bike size. These are designated by 26x1.5, 26x1.75, something along those lines. A decimal.
Tyres which actually use a fraction, are not compatible with these. Sheldon explains it pretty well: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.htm ... iondecimal
As it's an old shopper, I would guess that they were a fractional size, and the Contis are a decimal size.0 -
