What parts/tools/spares would you take on an mtb holiday?

I'm off to morzine in the summer. This week i've been collecting bits and pieces i'll need for the trip. So thinking of taking:

Bike
Fullface Helmet
Camalbak
Multi-tool
Armour
Gloves
Shoes
Tubes (lots)
Tools (allen keys, chain device, screwdrivers, pedal spanner, adjustable spanner, other assorted bike-specific tools...)
Spare chain links (power links)
Pump
Shock Pump
Spare mech hanger
Spare rear mech (maybe)
Spare tyre
Chain lube
Grease
Bike Bag (for flying)

Is there anything i'm missing of bike related stuff that would be useful for general repairs?

Plenty of riding clothes and a first aid kit perhaps?

    Energy bars/drink.

Plenty of tyre levers in case you break a few.

    Sunglasses and sun cream.

A couple of pairs of rubber gloves if you want to keep your hands clean.

A back light in case you want to ride at night anywhere.

i would probbaly take more than one spare tyre, quite rocky terrain, i wouldn't be suprised if you tore a sisedwall or two, depends what your tyres are though.
also brake pads are very important, i would take 4 pairs (superstar do 4 pack deals for brake pads)
  • Good point. Forgot brake pads. Exactly why i made this thread.

On the tyre front. I'm only planning on taking one spare. If i rip a sidewall i'll buy a new spare out there. I know it'll be expensive as prices will be inflated, but i'd prefer to chance it and probably save money and luggage space.

I'd burn in the brake pads before you go so you don't have to deal with half working pads halfway down a mountain
Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.

Since your considering a spare mech then a spare set of cables wouldn't be a bad idea.

There are shops in Morzine you know and they aren't that much more expensive than the UK so I'd not worry too much about taking a tonne of tube and tyres and cables with you - if you desperately need them you can always buy them there and support the local economy of the area a bit while you are at it.

Baud Sport at the base of the pleney is pretty decent and Evasion in centre of Les Gets.

  • @paul.skibum: Thanks for the reply. I'd heard that they were really expensive. Captive market and all that. Good to hear directly from someone with experience there.

I worked in Les Gets for a summer and they have a little of a mark up vs CRC or similar but for emergency supplies they are fine and no worries for tubes and what not - they also tend to be pretty friendly places if you make some effort with the franglais!

We always recommend bike specific spares, ie a rear mech hanger which can be hard to get hold of depending on what bike you have. And get your bike serviced and in top condition before leaving.Sounds like you're getting planned pretty well though

As discussed on this, you should also be aware that most French retail prices are a little more than in the UK, so if you break something you may spend more than you're used to. That said you can't bring everything. Expect more brake and tyre wear (and just generally everything wear!) with lift assisted riding.

We're also opening a new store in Morzine this summer with UK based Torico (www.toricomorzine.com), so are planning to get prices a bit more close to the UK ones where possible! Certainly good deals on tyres and tubes, and also hire of parts so if you break something on the last day you can keep on riding. Pop by and say hello. We're running free shop rides, and our staff will happily chat to you about our favourite rides (time allowing!). (Sorry for self-promo, but thought it's of use to this thread.......if you object tell me and I'll delete)

Oh and contrary to popular belief it does rain out here and can do so very heavily! Come prepared for downpours as well as sun :)

Most of all, just enjoy it!
