chain slipping

hey folks,
i've just replaced my old worn out cassette/chain on my Charge Duster and upon taking it for a test ride noticed the chain slipping when pedalling hard uphill. It was fine when it was on the workstand flicking through the gears :?
Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

It happens.
Just need to adjust the gears a bit more because they behave differently under big loads like pedaling hard uphill0 -
The gears seemed to be fine when on the stand, what further adjustments need I make?
I'm wondering whether it has anything to do with chain length I measured the new one by going round the big chain ring/cog combination leaving a couple of links overlap (couldn't use the old chain cos it had been butchered previously)...0 -
It was fine on the stand because there wasn't a big load on it.
Just fiddle with it a little bit untill you find the sweet spot0 -
chainrings are worn out.0

Was it slipping before you changed it? If it's an oldish wheel, the freehub wears eventually resulting in that slipping, and until you spot it, it'll have you convinced that the chain is slipping on the cogs.0

Thanks for the thoughts chaps.
It's only just started after changing the cassette/chain so I don't think its the freehub.
The chainrings are the originals and I was going to replace them, the inner and middle rings looked fine and its in the middle ring it was slipping, the outer is fooked and I'll be replacing it.
Do you guys think its worth changing them all then?0 -
It's often said in the motorcycling world replacing a single part of a chain drive set up is a false economy - although they only have 2 sprockets and a chain, the same can apply to normal bikes.
In my mind chain parts should all be replaced together a s a set as a worn sprocket will damage a new chain and vice-versa.
This doesnt necceserily mean the parts need to be identical type, just have the same amount of wear.

The chain casette and chain rings all wear together, so when you changed just the chain and casette they no longer match the chain rings, as the grooves will be elongated through use, the only cure is to bite the bullet and cough up for new chain rings.Ride bike, eat cake, drink tea, ride bike, eat cake, dri...........0

Got two new chain rings and a HTII bb removal tool ready for tonight let's see how that goes...0 -
Did you route the chain properly through the jockey wheels? Some people accidently route the chain around the wrong side of the tab.0

Did you route the chain properly through the jockey wheels?
Anyway, I replaced the chainrings friday night and the drivetrain is now performing flawlessly
Had a brilliant ride at Cannock on Sunday dry trails, sweet shifting and no chain slip, brilliant!0 -
May I suggest a chain measuring tool to avoid future extra expense?
I'm now on chain number 4 on my Stumpjumper and haven't yet changed the cassette or rings. And she runs as smooth now as she did the day she was picked up.Whyte 905 (2009)

some pretty poor advice on this thread.
Cycloros - have a look in FAQs and SheldonBrown for chain/drive train wear - it's all there in a reliable format!
Peter413 - it doesn't 'just' happen.....0 -
It does if the gears are not set up 100% correctly.
Either that or you are miss taking what I am saying0 -

Just had the same issues, new chain ,skip, new cassette still skip but much less and now just replaced middle chain ring,no more skip, all 6 months old and I clean and lube regulary.
Best tip I have just learned and will try is to use 3 chains and rotate every 250 miles. Will see if I get longer life. Bloody expensive this malarkey, bring on the new Alfine hubs.Don't think, BE:0
