Rim Widths/Dimensions

Looking around at rims and a question struck me. All the manufacturer's webistes quote internal rim width. Presumably this is what dictates the max tyre size you can realistically use and the shape it will take. My question is: does the external width have an effect on anything?

For example, my current rims (Sun Ringle EQ 27) have internal width of 19mm and an external width of 27mm, whereas a ZTR 355 has the same internal width but only a 24mm external width. What difference, if any, does this make? Thanks

well the sun rim is tapered to the bead so is a bit of an odd ball.

    nothing and everything.

more important is what the rim is designed for.

oh and the internal width has more of a bearing on the tyre profile produced.
