Has anyone any suggestions?
I'm thinking a pair of light trousers that has the zip off bottoms for riding, and full length for evenings. Probably a pair of padded cycling underpants.
Are there any that don't have seems in uncomfortable places? I'm thinking 100 miles per day.
Thanks!

Wear bib shorts for cycling - Di Marchi are dear but good quality. Wear ordinary shorts in the evening.

I'm thinking how are you going to wash your shorts/trousers if you're wearing them all day and probably not enough time to dry by morning. Could get very funky  . Like Tim Farr mentioned, some nice bibs for riding and shorts or proper light trousers for the evening allowing you to wash the bibs before going out in the evening.

Showers Pass do two zip off trousers - one shower resistant, one water resistant. The lighter hybrid zip off pant sounds like what you are looking for - I haven't used them for touring but I tried them on in a local bike shop and they felt really great, I'm tempted by them:

In the past, I've used 3/4 length pants for cycle touring, I've found them a very good compromise between on bike comfort and off bike respectability. Endura and Rapha do nice ones.

I'm trying to reduce weight/volume as much as possible, I'm using a road biike with a Topeak beam rack, so I'm a bit paranoid about volume, though I haven't tried packing yet. I thought using padded pants and taking 2 pairs might sort out the grunge issue. :D
    Thanks for the thoughts.

Buffalo make a pair of pertex travel trousers that are about 100g lighter than my Rohan Bags. At that weight you can afford to carry lightweight shorts in addition. The zippers of convertable trousers add weight and pack size.
I use standard cycing shorts, sometimes on their own as sometimes with normal shorts or trousers on top.
  • Endura humvee 3/4 shorts with a couple of padded undershorts (wearing one, the other drying out after you've washed it) are a good way to travel. Good enough to wear in the evening, dry quickly if they get wet and have loads of pockets.
