Cervelo S1 vs S2

I will be buying either an S1 or an S2. Weight is not an issue, neither is comfort as most rides on this bike will be less than 50 miles, but stiffness of the bottom bracket is.

Anyone ridden both can comment on whether the S2 is worth the extra £1200, as that sort of money will get me some cracking wheels.

    Hello.

    The bottom bracket area of the S2 is stiffer than a horny 17 year old looking dosed up on viagra.

    So is the S1's.

    However, whilst the S2 is absolutely sublime to ride, I'd rather have a Cannondale CAAD9 to an S1...

    Why would you take the CAAD9 over the S1 just out of interest?

    Better ride, almost as stiff. Prefer the look of them too!

    If weight is not an issue - save your money and go for the S1, The S2 is not worth the extra money for someone like yourself.

    Just out of interest, although it is kinda irrelevant, does anyone know the weights of the two frames anyway?

    Yes.

    S1 = Heavy.
    S2 = Lighter
    S3 = Lightest

    (Cervelo don't provide frame weights)

    S1 is about 1450g for a 54.

    My 58 (XL) S2 is 1180. Could get under a kilo for similar price but I just lurve it! Stiff and bloody fast, comfortable too!

    To be objective, I have an S3 much the same as the S2. I would suggest a test ride on the frame before you buy it. Its a stunning bike, but a little harder to ride than I expected due to its race like shape and form. No doubt its a stunning bike. I bought mine to ride as I could and came back fighting from serious illness in 2007 so figured life is short and if you want the S2 go for it. Its only money...!!!! LOL.

    I do wish I had prolonged test rides on it though as I perhaps would have spent money elsewhere, but will endeavour to get used to it.
    Best wishes,

    Pete.

    What were you riding before?

    I'm hoping to buy an S2 soon - but currently ride a Pro-fit Trek Madone. Already very race-ready geometry. So I'm assuming it won't be a big shock to my system.

    Just out of interest, as a heavier rider, what are the frame weight limits on the S series models?

    The first thing the manufacturers ask when you crack/break a frame is "how heavy was the rider?" which may discount an S2 for me anyway.

    nica Canyon for a change - they usually make me cringe.

    looks like the rear wheel picked up some road kill tho - better wipe that off, it might splatter the back of the seat tube and the rider's shoes.

    I've not long taken delivery of a new S1 running SRAM Force and I'm impressed with the weight to be honest - the ride is firm and fast, can't compare to the S2 but I can compare it to my R3 / SRAM Red which is just a stiff, but nowhere near as light.

    To date I don't find the S1 uncomfortable on longer rides, I'm using it more as a training bike - small photo from iPhone available at the following link:

    I had and still have a Pinarello FP3. What you need to consider about Cervelo is the 'Unique' Geometry in that the frame sizing seems incredibly similar. I choose a 54 but I had to mull long and hard about the 56 which technically and based on my height is too big, but the compact geometry would have perhaps been OK if I ran a 100mm stem on the 56. I decided to go for the 54 with a 120mm stem.

    I think it would have been swings and roundabouts in the end, but the top tube was 565 over 545 so the bars could have been a stretch even with a shorter stem. I did go for the 54 but still wonder if I did the right thing. I have however just returned from a solid hilly 50 miler and I am still fine tuning for / aft and I am looking at the seat post height. It is coming together ride by ride. A 55cm Cervelo would have been ideal but they dont make em'....

    Does anyone know where I can just get the CAAD framset up. Contemplating the S1 until I saw this. If I can get for the £900 mark that the s1 can be bought at.

    The finish on napolianD's example above is looks bling and my dura ace groupset and dura ace (old version c50 Tubs) would look superb on the white Caad. Can only find a foreign non eu supplier though.

    help required.

    CAAD9 vs S1 Questions?

    Been doing quite a bit of reading around CAAD9 and it is an old and well developed model of Cannondales which is rasurring with any frame. Its impossible to find a framset only in the UK, however, I would flog eveything (Groupset, wheels etc) off the whole bilke if I bought (really the like the liquigas replica)so would make some oney back on the £999 for example.

    In relation to this price, if the entire bike is in the ball park price category as the S1 for frame only, does this mean that the CAAD is made from cheaper materials and has a lesser frame quality than the S1, or is it just cervelo being uber expensive for what you get?

    I would be using the CAAD or S1 for Short RR's and Crit races. Would the CAAD9 be as suitable as the S1 for these tyes of races. Reviews on the CAAD talk of mile munching with ease and a more relaxed feel in comparison the the S1's raw power transfer and stiffness.

    I was 200% for the S1 for my next frameset in a few months, but am now doubting this???
