So, my yearning for hardtail has finally got the better of me. I've decided to build up my 2004 Giant XTC Frame. Going to try and build it up to 'race spec' without really spending any money. I'll be building it up out of spares from the shed.

Currently looks like this:

IMG_4135.jpg

Frame: 2004 Giant XTC3
Fork: Rockshox Sid Race, Circa 2002
Stem: 3t The (with Ti bolts)
Seatpost: Use Alien
Saddle: SDG Bel Air (Ti Rail)

Currently fettling the original cranks - Shimano FC-M470. They started off like this:

Non-drive side now looks like this:

Thats after about 4 hours of hand polishing (Autosol smells awesome). Drive side is taking more time as it's suffered quite a bit of abuse over the years.

I'll update this as work progresses. The aim is to have it ready as a spare bike for SITS in August.

thats some good work on the cranks, looks nice. bike seems to need some suspension at the back though, i notice there isnt any at the moment.

TBH, that was the better of the two. The drive-side was quite badly dented and gouged.

That's becuase it's currently sat on this XTC:

Well, I've got it built up and ready to ride:

I don't like the current bars, but that's all that was lying around in the shed:

    IMG_4144.jpg

The drive-side crank, not too happy with the finish:

    IMG_4143.jpg

Sum total actually spent so far £5.99 for the seatpost shim. :D

I don't intend to spend any further money on this bike eaither. It will become the 'upgrade' bike for the NRS - as I replace stuff on the NRS, the 'old' part will find it's way on to this bike. Strangely, I'll be getting new bars for the NRS next month...

If I rummaged around in my shed and come up with that, I'd be a very happy chap.

More stuff from the NRS' upgrades found their way across to this bike. Took it out for it's first major ride today and TBH I'm pleased overall. Needed a bit of adjusting on the saddle and bar ends post ride. Still not happy about the fork colour. May respray them (red) myself.

those massive cylinder things on the levers. could save a lot of weight without those

Ah. That'd be because it's a closed system rather than open.

Looking good Stu, especially for a bits bike.

    1. I can't use tubular rails with that seat-post-clamp.

2, I find WTB saddles uncomfortable..

    But definitely a bargain!

WTBs are weird there's one i love and others i've tried i didn't like. but that's my first racing style saddle and it definitely takes some getting used to, i nearly binned it till i found the sweet spot.

Latest upgrades - Gripshift ODI Ruffian grips, dropped the bar ends and flipped the stem. Also stuck a bottle cage on there as I'm carrying a drinks bottle on the commute now. You might also notice the replacement decals...

    DSC01733.jpg

And yes, those are the original 'pink' tyres, that have aged to a nice shade of orange...

New rear mech (XT) and bottom bracket will be ordered this week.

Those are the original ones. The template you sent me I'll be using for the NRS. Although it's respray is now on hold until after SITS in August. I also think I've found a local supplier to produce them for me.

    Further upgrades:

    DSC01753.jpg

New XT Shadow Rear Mech. The rapid rise XTR one didn't work well with the Gripshift.

    DSC01767.jpg

Replaced the blue resevior bolts with red ones.

    DSC01755.jpg

    Red A2Z chainring bolts.

    DSC01756.jpg

    New bottle cage bolts.

And, finally, in all it's awesomeness:

    DSC01760.jpg

I'm really loving this bike at the moment.

Its had a few upgrades since the last pics:

Carnkset & pedals off the NRS, Forks resprayed and rebuilt and fitted mudguards for the winter:

    Picture001-1.jpg

Not that happy with the decals on the forks, might have to get some that are red rather than orange (I did order red and they looked red until they were fitted).
