My gear lever feels like it has jammed.
Any idea whats causing it? I opened it up last night but didn't really know what I was looking for!
Its a 9 speed Shimano lever, any ideas how much a new one will cost and are they easy to fit?

    Model?

    Jammed or stiff?

If it's stiff, new cables will most likely solve it. Or at least shift the outer sections about and try and shift any crud in them to see if that makes a difference.

If it's really jammed, I would have thought it'd be fairly obvious once you'd got it open. You could try flushing it through- make sure you dry out and re-lube properly afterwards though. Pictures of the innards might help a diagnosis.

If it's really truly knackered, these should give you an idea of where to start:

    Model? SHIMANO DEORE MEGA DRIVETRAIN

Jammed or stiff? JAMMED. The up lever wont budge but the down lever does still click down.

Disconnect the cable from the mech, see if it moves, remove the cable from the shifter (you'll have to cut the end crimp off and pull it all the way through the outer to remove it).

New shifter will take a max of 30 mins to fit including new cables and outer if you know what you are doing and can index the gears.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
