Removing the spring from a fork leg

My son rides a Trek 4300, with 100mm RST Gila forks. The forks have never offered much travel, not helped by his light build. I have regularly stripped them down and serviced them, which makes a small improvment, but only for a short time. Today I removed 1 spring from one leg, just to try it. The result was awsome, a nice plush fork, with almost full travel. Is it ok to run the fork like this long term? I can't see it being a problem as alot of forks run with only 1 spring anyway.

Thanks guys

    sure, he must be light.

how much sag is he getting now? if 20-25% it will be great.

He is getting exactly that, about 20%. The fork even dips when he brakes! They had never done that before!

Good stuff, cheers. I'm just glad the forks finally work as they were designed, its only taken a year of fettling. My bad, should of thought of it before.
