If the frame had been faced before, you wouldn't need to get it done each time you replaced the BB would you?

If so, and the frame came as part of a built up bike, would it be safe to assume it had been faced before the original BB had been fitted, or would you always do it again to be on the safe side?

Finally, you would just be looking at replacing the cups if there was a problem - the chainset and axle itslef should be OK, shouldn't it?

Generally no. Once done, that's it.

But if on removing the BB you damage the faces, or have it repainted, then it can help to have it refaced.

Just replace the cups/bearings if they are shot.

I had my frame faced yeh, figured if im gon do it i may aswell do it right.

Yeah me too - I only just fitted my Deore M590 chainset last weekend.

If you are going to do it, you are best doing it properly. Get the frame faced and install the bearings as per manufacturers instructions. Then ride.

I do hope indeed that I get more than 500 miles out of mine!

HT2 can be problematic, i had a cannondale oct 2008, came with GXP, BB wore out in about 3 months, went to local shop to get a new one as i was desperate. This one lasted but the Pedal threads on the cranks sheared out. Replaced temporarily with old isis (no face sitting shells). Then 6-7 months ago got a Deore Crankset off Merlin for £50, fitted that. Then last week the BB was seized when i got it out, i freed it up then surprisingly it was loose with 2-3mm lateral play after a few miles.

I had assumed as it came with a GXP the BB would of been faced. Obviously not the case.

Had to bite the bullet and get my frame faced and a XT BB fitted for £40, not bad i reckon. Shame the shop didn't put the correct spacers on the BB, i sorted it myself.

The thing is i have had the same set of Saints on my DH bikes for 5-6 years now same BB and the bearings are still smooth. all the bikes have had perfectly machined BB faces. This would semm to prove that a well face BB keeps your BB in good shape.

    Just my experiences with HT2

I was sitting here thinking the same thing. Many bikes just above entry level these days come with HT2 cranks or similar external BB systems fitted. if the frames are not being faced by the manufacturers then one would expect a very high rate of failure

bike shop dudes; what's your view / experience of new off the peg bikes that come fitted with external BBs .... worth stripping the crank/BB out and facing the frame on the assumption that the manufacturer won't have bothered? What's your attitude if someone comes in with a goosed BB in warranty?

and btw, 40 quid I assume covered the price of the XT cups? in which case sounds like a fair price but face and fit a crank for 40 sounds harsh, my LBS face frames for 10 euros and tbh I think they charge that as a sort of "10 Euro minimum for anything" as it takes only a few minutes

Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

some makes are better than others.

If a bike comes in with a worn BB sooner than seems OK then the Facing tool comes out.

but if it came with one fitted i would not bother until new BB time and then get it checked at the same time.

Deore HT2 fitted in May last year still going strong on my bike - no winter riding but must have done over 1000 miles. Frame was faced, fitted per instructions by me.

My mate has same BB on his commuter which racks up 15 miles 5 days a week come rain or shine and is now 18 months plus old. I also have it on my Heckler which hasn't done anything like the miles but is running smooth and silky.

Not much wrong with the BB in my opinion. Face that mother.
