Went out on Saturday, got soaked. I put my shoes on the radiator to dry and now they smell of cats piss. They've stunk out the bedroom and wife not best pleased threatening my shoes live in the shed. The fascist.

Any ideas how i can rid my shoes of the smell of cats piss? Before you ask, no a cat didn't wee wee on them.

That's the bacteria in the shoes from your feet. You can get rid of it, and the bacteria, by washing/soaking them in a solution of bicaronate of soda. Dry them out slowly, it's not a good idea to place leather shoes on a hot radiator.

Only ever had this problem with leather astroturf boots after getting them soaking two to three times a week through winter. The answer is antibacterial shoe spray. There are a few brands out there and all seem to be good as each other.

I use Wurth Helmet & Clothing Sanitiser spray. It's designed for motorcyclists helmets, gloves and boots. I use it on my cycling helmet pads & straps and my shoes....no pong :D
You can probably get it online of from a motorbike shope that sells leathers etc.

+1. Bicarbonate of soda really works, I dose my walking boots and cycling shoes two or three times a year. Cheap and very cheerful.

  • Cat litter (appropriately enough) can be used as a deodorant for various objects (booksellers use it for smoky or mouldy books for example). Place with litter in a sealed tin or box overnight, or place some litter in tied-off socks or old tights inside the shoes for a spell. It has to be the type with odour absorbent qualities of course (not sure if they all do, and my kitty has an outside convenience). Use clean litter, otherwise you're back to square one!
