On One 456 vs Carrera Fury!!

Right, we have a cycle to work scheme coming up soon and I am going to dip in for a mountain bike. Not sure if it's Cyclescheme or Halfords yet.
I would like something that I can use round the trails/do a bit of offroading but would like it to be a capable machine. I live in Biggleswade so no major mountains but may travel further afield if I get in to it!
I've had a good look around and am currently looking at a Carrera Fury or Boardman Team HT if Halfords but if cyclescheme I believe I could get an ON One 456. I've seen it described as a 'Hooligan' and see it will take longer travel forks. People have also mentioned it is heavy.
My question is what is it designed for and what is the difference between the 456 and the 100mm travel alu framed Fury or Boardman (or indeed other bikes of that ilk)?
Is the 456 a bit much/specialist for general off road riding?

The 456 is designed for harder riding than the Boardman, and slightly harder than the Fury which has a 120mm fork, not 100mm. Being steel the frame is liable to weigh more than a pound more.
What spec have you seen for 600?0 -
The fury actually takes up to 140mm. It's only this year they put the Epicon 120mm fork on. It had the 140mm Tora on before that.
The boardman is certainly more XC.
The On-one's have a good following though and I quite fancy swapping my Fury frame for one myself. There's also the 456 summer season which is a bit beefier and heavier than the standard 456.0 -
Super, I've not seen an on one spec for £600, but could/would go up to £1000.
excuse my ignorance, but when you say harder riding what do you mean? I think it's unlikely I would be doing major drops etc however would like the bike to tough enough for general xc and hammering down a few hills!
Would the weight be an issue? The Carrera Vulcan I currently have weighs a ton. I wouldn't be racing so guess shouldn't be too much of a problem.

It can take and is tested for a 150mm fork so would probably take bigger hits with more aplomb.
But if going to spend upto a grand, why look at the Fury? Plenty of other bikes for a grand.
A built up 456 with kit to suit its character will be no lighter than your Vulcan.0 -

130mm not 140mm.
The 456 is a brilliant frame but it's not light. I think mainly you need to decide what you want from the bikes as you've posted an XC bike, an allrounder and a bit of a bigger hitter, they don't do the same jobs (though the 456 doesn't have to be a hefty blunt instrument, built up lighter they can do the same job as the Fury)Uncompromising extremist0 -

According to on one it can take up to a 160mm fork, they don't specify a axel to crown height though0 -
I'm after an allrounder. I take it Northwind you were referring to the Fury?
If the CTW is Cyclescheme and I can't get the Halfords bikes what other bikes would be in the same category? (I have read the other threads re what HT etc, just need a pointer for an allrounder!)0 -

For what it's worth, I've now given my recently built up 456 a good thrashing a few times now and I love it... I usually ride a FS bike, so this was intended as a bit of a play bike, but it's capable of way more than that.
True, it's not the lightest bike in the world and I'm not convinced the fact it's steel make a whole lot of difference to the ride (although it'd be pretty difficult to prove either way) but as bike to 'just ride around' it's brilliant! The only nagging doubt is that I can't help thinking that a Cotic Soul might be even better (at 4 times the price!)
Can't comment on the others mentioned, but the spec on the On-One site looks pretty sorted for the money.0 -
