Looking for a good self propelled petrol lawn mower. I'm presently using a Flymo Quicksliver which is totally crap. I hear Honda are very good. Any thoughts would be most welcome. cheers

I use a honda at work, treat it like sh!t and it always starts first time. Get one with a roller on the back if you want nice stripes.

A couple of guinea pigs are cheaper and more effective than lawn mowers.

Costs more than the guinea pigs. Might start singing Genesis songs. Doubly bad.

Cylinder, better cut every time. The sharper the cut the better the grass strength,

Atco's always used to be very good (Grass cutting was my main source of income as a kid!). I've no idea if their reputation is what it was though as it's been years since I bought a mower.

Cylinder mowers do give a better cut and finish. Best used on flatish lawns though and a good cylinder mower is going to set you back a few grand. Bit more complicated than your average rotary mower, setting the bottom blade against the cyclinder and getting used to the clutch takes a bit of practise. Not ideal for most back gardens.

OP, buy yourself a honda. job done.

    What's wrong with it?

The reasons why you think "it's crap" may give rise people providing better advice.

Unless they've changed, Briggs and Stratton engines were sealed units so, if they broke, it was a case of throwing them away and buying a new one. Honda engines are virtually bomb proof! But Honda mowers are expensive. Best buy is a Honda powered mower.

+1 for anything with honda on it engine wise.
the flymo i used was not fit for mowing. i would certainly have done a neater job with a pair of scissors and maybe only marginally slower.

    I got this:

Started 1st time after winter and has never let me down. Big grass box and easy to clean.

    APOLS FOR HUGE LINK!

Its character building as my Dad often used to point out to me, other such character building exercises included:

    washing the car
    taking out the bins
    clearing out the loft
walking 2.5 miles to school in the pi55ing rain
    hoovering
    making our own packing up

But in all seriousness once we became big enough to chat back he bought a Hayter and has had it for 16 years now with no complaints.

    + 1 for a Honda engine

Also consider a Mountfield, had one for years, I got my Mother a £99 B&Q petrol rotary also good, as a kid I used a push Atco mower and got stripes of which I was very proud of.
