Looking to buy the 705 but noticed the prices vary by about £100 pounds between wiggle and specialist GPS websites. All the packages seem similar cadence, heartrate monitor included, only difference I can see is that some include european road maps on an sd card. All the other packages come with the standard "basemap" can I get by with this for UK use?

the basemap is pretty grim, i think it's just major roads and nothing else

the european city navigator map is very good (it doesn't cover just cities, even in rural portugal the coverage is excellent)

you can get the sd map for under 50 quid, you can try the map online here...

Thanks, I thought that would be the case, and I hate buying something only to find the basic package needs upgrading straight away.

Just get the open source maps, and make your routes by .tcx.

No need for the overpriced City Navigator maps

Less hassle though :p I have Topo and City Navigator maps on mine and the CN ones are much better for road stuff

Buy the maps on CD, not the SD card, makes it a whole load easier to plan stuff on your PC, and you can copy the maps FROM the CD onto the 705 unit.
