Rear disks

I'm torn between buying a new bike and/or fixing up my 2003 (i think) Fire Mountain.

It's one of the aluminium framed ones.

I don't' know if I can fix rear disks to it or not though, what am I looking for the mounts? THere are two holes, but they look more like pannier mounts to me.

Any ideas if they can be fitted or not?

    Rear disc mount

You can get disc mount adaptors for some non disc frames, but these mostly fit steel frames.

Nope. don't have one of them on it.

That might have sealed her fate.

Or do I really need rear disks? Is it more important to have front disks?

Discs up front give more stopping power than at the back.

You could run a disc up front & V's out back, which should improve your stopping power.

A rather prolific poster on here says this about braking "front is for braking, rear is for steering" & I agree.

    I was wondering about that.

So the next question I keep asking myself Ïs it worth saving my Fire Mountain or not'

I think it's a 2003/4 - Aluminium, silver with the blue and black logos,

It's light just now, certainly lighter than a lot of the bikes I've looked at in the 500 range, but it's older.

It is worth keeping it going, but probably not worth spending loads on, just replace what needs replacing & upgrade it a bit if you feel the need.

Rear wheel, cassette, freewheel, front shocks, chainset, bottom bracket (most likely), front wheel. :P

God knows how she got into that state after spending several years in storage and then being used for a year or so by me again.
