Cartridge Bearing Hub disassembly

I was doing some routine mantenance last night and discovered that I've got a worn out bearing on the back wheel of my Kona Paddywagon SS machine.
Tonight I tried to take the hub apart so I could knock the bearings out andfind out the size so I could get some new ones on order.
I took off the freewheel and the cone type things on each end of the axle meaning I could see the bearings I wanted to get out, only trouble was the axle didn't come out at this point - should it? If not how do I get the axle out in order to get at the bearings?
My Google-Fu hasn't helped me out with this. Can anyone give me a hint or tip or should I just throw the whole wheel at my LBS and tell them to sort it?
Thanks in advance
Rob
