Gloves Question

Was looking at a few pairs of gloves at the LBS today and they ass seem to have either loops on the fingers or the fingers are connected together by a bit of material. What is this for, was afraid to ask in the LBS as nearly every pair had this. Didnt want to seem a fool. I havnt got a clue what its for though.
