How do i tighten my Disc brakes?

New to forum.
Recently purchased new bike but brakes are not great and i feel they would benefit from being tightened. I have the old style brakes on the rear of the bike and am pretty confident with them but have a disc brake on the front wheel and am unsure how to tighten them - currently i pull the brake handle/lever completely and it takes a while to slow down let alone stop!
