Anyone live somewhere they've been? I'm interested in how their protests went as they are due in Aylesbury on Saturday and we are one of only a couple of shops staying open. Has there been violence or damage in the towns they've been to?

Don't have the option to steer clear, I'll be working. Just want to know if by being open we are being put at risk? Did a google search but didn't find any actual reports, just people mouthing off.

depends if the AFL turn up, thats normally when the real fun starts, though i dare say custom will not be good the day they are around (unless you sell nazi flags and baseball bats)

No, just next to an Indian restaurant, opposite an Asian owned store and an Asian run KFC and a taxi rank full of Asian taxi drivers.

Selected highlights from Wikipedia for what it's worth:

"The English Defence League (EDL) is an English far-right single-issue organisation formed in 2009. Its stated aim is to oppose the spread of Islamism, Sharia law and Islamic extremism in England, although the EDL's political direction is being debated within the group"

"The EDL evolved from the football casual subculture and is loosely organised around figures in hooligan firms. One of the organization’s principal strategists is Alan Lake, who has also advised the Sweden Democrats on tactics"

"The group states that its aim is to demonstrate peacefully in English cities,[8] but conflicts with Unite Against Fascism and other opponents have led to street violence and arrests, resulting in some EDL marches being banned.[5] Journalists that have covered EDL marches have received death threats.[18]"

There's also a list of how each march in the last year turned out in terms of arrests (or not as the case may be) on the wikipedia entry.

Finally, the anti-Fascist publication Searchlight "says the EDL poses two risks. One is the formation of a street army prepared to travel around the country to fight and provide organisational support. The other is the group's tactics of carrying placards and chanting in places that are potential flashpoints. Searchlight added that not every leader of the EDL is a fascist or hardcore racist.[5]"

  • Hello mate,

I happened to be in Bolton when things kicked off. There HAS been damage done to shops, but as somebody mentioned, it's only when they clash with their nemesis UAF (Unite Against Fascism).

Do you actually own a bike shop? You're probs alright, but why take the chance? Foot traffic will be close to 0% and you run the small risk of something happening anyway!

Just to see what they're capable of, though bear in mind this was taken off the UAF site.

    Cheers

    Yeah.

UAF don't do themselves many favours by getting as, if not more in some instances (say the police at least) violent.

As long as it gets no press coverage (and given that the EDL give them death threats anyway, there's not that much chance of that).

Not much help to you though Guillano.

as much as i hate the EDL, the UAF dont do themselves any favours, saying these people shouldnt be allowed to speak. Half the time they come across just as bad (well maybe not as bad)

UAF have core of socialist left wing people who beleive in freedom of movement and speech for all but dont want anyone to say anything they dont agree with and the EDL are a bunch of mostly football supporting males, although i have seen families with very young children with them, who come together under the EDL banner when they are not kicking 7 shades of s%$t out of each other on a saturday afternoon.

They (EDL) are not right wing in the political sense and most of them dont have the ability to hold any kind of educated debate about immigration or the opening of a mosque. They are as bad as each other. Both attract rent-a-mob.

If it is policed effectivly there shouldnt be much bother as it should be contained with in an area and should be away from shops etc however always be on the safe side and go for a saturday afternoon ride in to the Bucks countryside.

He's away getting some 'life experience' and wants to work for Blackpanther once he's sorted his BNP application out.

As with any extremist groups, what there really want is publicity which is disproportionate to their support, so ideally, for them to turn up and nobody be there to see it or report it so it was a non-event would be the best possible result

I suspect if it is just them and the police it will be the most peaceful possible - stay away and dont go and heckle

I've got to say that I feel these things usually kick off the worst when a group with an opposing view turn up to heckle.

Look, I'm a full on guardianista, pinko. But last I looked we had the right to free speech (give or take!).

Mind you, the issue is really whether they are out to protest about something, or to have a bit of a rumble....

But, the police would have a lot easier time protecting the asian shops if they weren't also having to keep to rival factions away from fighting each other.....why can't the heckling groups see this and just let these things pass????

The UAF posed more problems than the EDL on the two actual demo's and the abortive one round here.

random attacks on the local area and cops because they couldn't get at the EDL, they (edit - EDL) mainly stayed penned in by the cops and couldn't go anywhere, also as they do have a football hooligan element in their number, they know how far to push the cops buttons and when to back off.

the UAF seem to be the more excitable rent a mob types who get all giddy and don't know when to stop.

same when the BNP got intecepted coming into my local town by the Law, the anti's who were already there waiting just went on a rampage through the shopping centre because their intended target didn't turn up. me and my kids spent an hour locked in WH Smiths wondering where my wife was.

they're all different cheeks of the same a**ehole in my opinion.
