I would say so. Unless you find something heavily reduced.

i just went through the exact same choosing process.

The Carrera swung it for me with the nicer forks, and more 'all round' abilities. Plus local shops (Halfords) where i could ride/test the bike, and take it back if/when there are any issues etc

I wasnt sure at first because i wasnt keen on Carrera - But im really glad i went for it - Been on about 5 decent rides off road and its been brilliant.

Both great... Carrera has better forks and wheels, Rockrider has better drivetrain and still good forks, and not particularily good wheels. Obviously the Fury's longer travel, though it's just a little steeper than a 120mm trail bike should probably be these days but it's still a slightly bigger hitter than the rockrider.

I'd have the Carrera if I was buying a bike under £600, no doubt about it. I'd budget for replacing the crank as soon as the BB wore out (the standard one does the job but it's a Powerspline and the BBs are s**t, plus it's pretty heavy, so I'd fit a Deore crank rather than feed the bike BBs.) but other'n that it's a great solid allround build.

The wheels on the 8.1 are not too bad at all.Still sealed cartridge bearing hubs and built with Rigida rims, and Rigida make some dam fine rims, these are tough as old boots and I see very few coming back for new wheels or truing.
Granted the Fury does have slightly better forks (if you need to change the travel) and slightly better wheels but thr rest of the package is far better plus the 8.1 has a better warranty.5 years frame and 2 years parts.

Better groupset for one, X7 as opposed to X5.I find the X7 shifters nicer to use plus they are more robust.
Avid Juicy 3's give way mor efeel than the Tektro's too.
Cranks either Truvativ Firex or some are coming with Deore are way mor erobust than ISIS or powerspline.

Swings and roundabouts really - both excellent bikes for the money, and WMB award winners. Many prefer the Tektro to the Juicy.

The Deore crank would be a nice touch.

my dad just got the 8.1, and it came with hollowtech deores, full x7, but the x7 shifters don't have indicators :? whereas the cheaper x5 does- weight saving? the forks are good- remote lockout, preload and turnkey rebound, and it's really light
  • Get a Trek 6000

very nice learning platform for singletrack riding.
reliable and great to upgrade. I put some EA50 bars on mine at 680mm - now the bike feels really nice and controlled.

    Trek 6000 highly recommended!

You don't need gear windows, your legs will tell you when to change gear
The new X7 shifters no longer have indicator windows like the higher end X9's don't.

I have the deore shifters with the red line in the windows, only even noticed it the other day. Do people really get time to look at this sort of thing when riding? Surely you either go up or down depending on whats ahead of you?

I bought a Rockrider 8.1 from the Stockport Decathlon store a week ago. Great bike and far higher spec than any of the others. At £499 you can't go wrong.
  • I too was drawn between the same two bikes. I don't think either is a wrong choice. The Rockrider has a better groupset but they have the same brakes. The Fury has the better wheels and a better fork.

I brought a Fury the last time Halfords did their 20% off Carerra bikes. It makes the choice easier when you can get one for £439 (just like you can this weekend until Tuesday).

I can't say I made a better choice because how do I know that? I do know that I'm glad I went for the longer travel bike - the riding I do is in the Peak District and with my inexperience the extra travel is welcome on these rocky trails.

I've used my Fury hard every weekend since I got it and it continues to perform well. I don't feel the need to upgrade any of the running gear yet, but will when mechs etc wear out or get wiped out.

If you check out the posts from me you can see mine and further opinions in the 'my bikes' section of this website.

Thanks for the replies chaps, how much more do you think a bike with the same specs would cost if it had giant or specialized etc on it?just out of interest like.
  • Not sure how much they go for now, but I picked up a Merlin Malt 1 for just over £500 a few years ago. Great value and much better fork than my mates who went for Specialzed etc

The only Malt in this price range has XCR forks. Good frame, nice groupset etc but that's a huge step back from these 2.

The Yukon's an amazing amount of bike for £430 quid. Still not a good choice. A hardtail with a higher spec level (ie Fury or Rockrider) will be a far better option for most people. Even building a hardtail to a good spec at this price is a big ask never mind a full suss.

A friend of mine got the rockrider 8.1, very nice bike, great detailing on the frame, fork is nice (i'd have it over any suntour any day of the week, you all say the suntour is better, but with their reputation for QC and my experience with rockshox being totally solid, i know what i'd do.), plus the x.7 gearing is great (his has indicator windows), feels, looks and works really well, how they got it on a £500 bike i'll never know! I didn't know the wheels were cartridge bearing, but i had an old decathlon wheel, bearings were ok, as far as i know, and the rigida rim took a lot of punishment. Plus his came with the deore hollowtech II crankset, far better than the truvativ alternative. Get the rockrider.

Indicator windows get in the way, i always remove mine, like you say, your legs tell you when you need to change gear.

If the magazines got hold of these decathlons in their grouptest it wouldn't be a grouptest, more an advert why to get a decathlon over anything else their 200 quid hardtail cheapest proper mtb and was brill (went to buy one for a mate hence going there), the 300 quid one would have trounced the 400 quid grouptest in a recent MBUK 9 speed x5 on a 300 quid bike how do they?

And as for the 8.1, well all i can say is if i can sell my saracen at the end of this month i'll have one that truly caught my eye with it's looks alone, then the all sram transmission just put the icing on the cake and it felt great to be perched on !

Can anyone tell me if the voodoo bokor at halfords is a better option than the fury or rockrider? The specs mean very little to me, i like riding rough trails.
  • bdigital
    bdigital Posts: 193
The Bokor eats both the Fury and the RR 8.1 for breakfast.

Buts its quite a bit more expensive, so you would expect it too.

WMB and MBUK have tested the 5.2, 5.3, 6.3 and 8.1.

Well I was in the same position as you and all I would say is go to the shops to try the bikes as I found the fury a more comfortable position so I went for it. Its more about your personal preference as both the bike have very similar specs

Hows about the GT Aggressor XC 1 at Halfords as you mentioned - available for £503 online! Seems a good deal to me
