I've got Crank Bros eggbeaters on mine. If you're planning to use it offroad you're really going to have to go with spd's rather than road shoes/pedals. I've used the eggbeaters this winter and they've done the job well, they clear mud easily. I think the bearings need more attention than other makes, so they'll need some regreasing soon.

If you are doing both I'd go for Shimano 520's
I used mine mainly for racing and have the egg beaters which are far better for mud clearance

    These are eggbeaters

They are an 'open' design so they don't clog up the mud, but it all depends on what your intended use is.

Yes you wear SPD shoes with them, but I use Shimano m520 pedals and ridden them in some of the worst possible conditions off road and never had a problem. They also perform well on my road bike. The best of both worlds

    +1
to m520 & m540's - cheap as chips and built very solidly.

It depends on how much off road riding you intend to do. If you're doing a lot then off road shoes make sense, but if it's just the odd trip on a bridleway or canal towpath then you might as well stick with road shoes. That said, a decent pair of MTB shoes will have little to no impact on your performance on the road.

If it were me I'd get a good pair of SPDs and, as others have recommended, the m520 and m540s are very good value for money, then visit a shop and get the shoes that fit best for the budget you have. If you're new to this then I'd strongly recommend you try a variety of shoes in a decent shop and go for the ones that feel the most comfortable.

Eggbeaters are great for muddy cyclocross conditions but their durability is poor and they require regular servicing so personally I'd avoid them unless you plan on racing cyclocross next season.
