That's right... the conditions at the heart of the arch are ideal for retarding the going off process of concrete. Difficult to believe the concrete there still hasn't 'set' isn't it!?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the entire structure is so heavy that it has actually depressed the earth's crust where it sits. The only man made structure heavy enough to do this

Re: pics. I'll post a few, but they're on the desktop so I'll do it later.

It is an awesome spectacle though.

For anyone interested, the mule rides into the canyon are pretty wild. You need reservations about a year in advance though. Day of, and you'll be laughed at.

Recently watched the BBC docu- drama about the construction of it.

Really bad conditions for the workers supervised by some guy called Crowe that was determined to hit all targets.

Interesting the way they had to blow out the four diversion tunnels first.

Yep, had to divert the river flow enough to build a mini dam so they had a dry area to work on the big one. :)

Impressive number of posts about an American landmark. I drove through it at about 02:00 in late July 1992 on my way from NY to CA. A spectacular sight, for sure. I’ve rented a houseboat and stayed on Lake Mead and saw it up close. Neat and spectacular as heck.

There is more cement used in the Hoover dam than in Basildon town centre, but only just.

There is also a lot of metal tieing it together, but I think there's more 'slag' in Basildon.

The metal tieing it together in basildon prevents a Chav-alanche happening. :D
