ooof - annual service on the commuter

So about once a year I get my (very helpful) LBS to give the commuter a proper service. In between I do easy stuff like replace chain/cassette/brake inserts/tyres/bar tape and try to keep the bike not too filthy and reasonably lubed.
The LBS tend to do some of that plus rpelace cables and do full stripdown and relube.
The bike is about 4 years old and has probably done 15000 miles. It's a planet-x uncle john with 105 groupset. Cost 800 quid new. Anyone like to guess how much the service cost this time?
I'll give a hint - no new wheels/mechs/shifters/cranks were involved.

I'd hope no more than £80 if you weren't having anything major replaced. You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quin.0

If you have the space - service it yourself!
In terms of guess £170?!0 -
If you do all that you say about and your LBS treat you well I wouldn't expect it to be more than £50-£70.x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

£0.00 because they could find nothing that needed doing on account of your sterling maintenance regime during the year?0

Hmm.
Having just spent the following on my commuter for it's second refit (10 years old):
Chainset £70
BB £40 (inc fitting)
pedals £40 (optional extra!)
replacement V brakes + pads £60
chain £20
cassette £40
cables £5
front mech £35
various lubes, bits and bats £20
A grand total of £335. The bike only cost £450!

Closest wins the freshly serviced bike right? :P0 -
Well it looks like I oversold my maintenance regime
although I had changed a chain and cassette that was about 6 months and 2000 miles ago. Work done seems to have been
new chain
new cassette
new bearings in bottom bracket
new rear wheel bearings
strip down rear mech, clean, relube, rebuild (it was misbehaving a bit, mechanic said he thought it might need replacing)
remove, strip down brakes regrease (cantis)
strip down headset and relube
replace cables
replace bar tape
very good clean (it had been a while  )
3.5 hours labour (apparently just about everything was disassembled from the frame)
(drum roll) ......... £215
Like I say, oof.
I know I'm going to get a few comments saying that they saw me coming but they have had the bike a few times before and I've never felt that they did unnecessary work. I think their labour rates are fine. I do think their parts are a bit pricy vs shopping around on the internet but last time they had the bike they fitted (for no charge) a new chainset I had bought off the internet.
All that said, I think I may be upping my maintenance regime a tad.

I'd say that looks pretty fair - it compares favourably to £170 for a similar end-of-year service I had a while back, where they changed almost as much as you. £215 is just over £61 per hour which for skilled work seems pretty fair. I doubt they're getting rich off you.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

If that took a mechanic half a working day then no, they would not make any money.0
-
I assumed that price was including parts and labour.
If it is labour only I would say it sounded steep.
£61 per hour for a bike mechanic sounds loads to me, what is the going rate for bike mechanics?0 -
About 2.70 an hour I got paid when I started lol.0

Doh! Typed in a hurry. The £215 includes parts I believe. Out of that they will have to cover the cost of the parts, pay the mechanic, employer's NI contributions, rent on the premises, corporation tax, and so on, and so on, so profit will be a pretty small proportion.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! yes, includes parts. I'm not complaining about the bike shop.
I'm surprised that supersonic reclons 3.5 hours is a long time. Takes me an hour just to give the bike a thorough clean and I don't get it very shiny...0 -
That reminds me, I must book my drive way ornament in for a service.I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they have such great ideas0

to be fair, having ridden the machine in question this morning, it does feel like a new bike...0

budgie,
have you actually had any work done at a bike shop this year?
it does cost, y'know0 -
It was a similar experience that got me to buy a toolset, workstand and book. Not been back to the LBS since.0

A good mechanic, in a good work shop, should be able to strip a frame and reassemble in an about hour. Give some more for servicing parts and this is a 90 minute job really.0
