Hi guys, I'm after a new pair of wheels to race on, my nice old Ultegra 6500's took a beating down in Penzance at the weekend and I'm looking to replace them.

I'm looking to spend around £250 which from the looks of it should get me c.1600g set of factory wheels - does anybody have any advice for wheels at this price point?

I weigh 72kg and race mostly crits and circuit races so will need something fairly stiff. Any advice much appreciated.

Al ltogether now ... Model Bs!

Seriously, I've never tried them but people here say they are great for the money, albeit flexy.

£250 ... maybe also look at Easton?

Bit of an awkward amount as you've really got to shell out about £100 more than that to get something significantly better than entry level Aksium type wheels (which are good BTW).

Fulcrum/Campagnolo tend to get well reviewed for being stiff and could get a set for about your budget, they can also take a bit of a beating so should last well too.

no offense 33'er but the Xeros are crap.

I've had a pair years ago and was underwhelmed to put it mildly.

Light and decent hubs yes. Flexy as rolf harris's wobble board - yes.

also, they get knocked out of true pretty easily.

For £250, the Pro-lite Bracciano's will be fantastic value.

I have a set of Pro-lite Stelvios, I don't think they make them anymore, but they are similar to the Braccianos, and they are seriously good for the money, very light and the bearings are really smooth.

I also have Mavic Ksyrillium Elites, and the weight is fairly comparable.

Those Pro-Lite Braccianos received a very good review in a Cycling Plus magazine (assuming people are happy to take the reviewer's word for it all).
  • Thanks for that, I had a look at both the Xeros - I dismissed because several reviews say they are pretty flexy, and also the Pro-Lites. They look like a brilliant wheel for the price but like STEFANO said, the stock date is still a while off. Easton EA50 SL's and Circuits are around my price range, does anybody have any experience of them?

Prolites at Ribble for much cheapness - think they are very similar to Model B's but maybe better hubs and handbuilt too!

  • Other options are Ultegra 6700 from Ribble or Kore Gradient SL from Chain Reaction - the Kores are sub 1500g and I'm worried they ight be pretty flexy? Anybody using either of these wheelsets?

    These are excellent wheels http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/penta-aero-20-rear-mp-wheelset-52473110/#INFO-DETAIL
I'm pretty sure they are DT hubs but not sure of the model, I know we fitted a DT Campag freehub body to a set a while back, rims are Rigida and spokes are DT revolution I think.

I have fulcrum 5 evos and find they do the job well, light and seem to roll well and have stood up well to the poor road surfaces of our country!!

I saw some Ksyrium Equipe for £200 yesterday - can't remember where but you could probably google it - I had a set years ago reduced to £150 and with the way prices have gone up I reckon they would be a good buy for £200.

edit - googled it - JE James - says in stock.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • might be worth taking a look at the soul wheels:

I've got both those. 5's are bombproof, zonda's fast as f00k (or is that just me  )
  • Managed to get hold of a set of 2006 Ksyrium SL SSC wheels that have jsut had new rims built on to them. Should do the job nicely. Thanks for the advice!
