New Rear Derailleur

the old Acera rear derailleur's finally packed up on my hack - its a Shimano Acera 8 speed on a raliegh max cromo mountain bike.
now the bikes at least 15 years old, so my question is, what rear derailleur to i replace it with? i just want something cheap and cheerful that'll do the job. am guessing the original is no longer for sale - whats compatible?

fair enough - wasnt sure if derailleurs were more specific
i'll find myself a nice cheap one online then
