bottom bracket problem

Hi Guys,
I bought an old Peugeot Elite bike with carbolight frame for £15.00 which I intend to convert into a summer single speed commuter.
Before I started the project I took the bike for a spin and it was riding ok.
When I started to strip the bike down I noticed that the bottom bracket was a bit scratchy and grindy when I turned the pedals by hand.
I dismantled the tapered square cup and cone bottom bracket and the axle is indeed pitted and worn.
The closest I can get to a match is an axle from STS cycles called a 5S which is very close.
The axle from the Peugeot is stamped 123 which I take it to be the length in millimeteres but the axle I intend to buy is 126.5 but the part of the axle where the bearings will run ( Bearing races ) are exactly the same width 54mm.
The bottom bracket shell on the peugeot is 68mm but the axle from STS is for 70mm.
None of the 68mm axles had the same bearing race width.
I read on the web somwhere that some peugeot bikes although having a 68mm shell can use and some were fitted with a 70mm English axle.
The Peugeot uses quarter cage -cartridge type bearings not loose ones.
I have dated the Peugeot to be a 1988 model and I think the bottom bracket has English threads.
I can get a sealed bottom bracket measuring 68mm by 122.5mm on CRC for £8.00.
If the Peugeot has english threads would this fit straight in.
Your help and advice is much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Supergunn.
