My rear Open Pro let go at the braking surface, in spectacular fashion yesterday whilst I was riding in the lakes. it was like a gun going off. Luckily it was on a flat section after a very steep descent.
They were a couple of thousand miles old and had seen me through some pretty foul Scottish weather. My main concern was a lack of a wear indicator on the rim so thats a necessary factor next time which is why Im posting.

Im after a set of strong hand-built wheels for my winter/training bike, can anyone recommend an online source?

Cheers

How about Exal LX17 rims (take tyres from 25mm), wear indicator, built on 105 hubs by Spa Cycles. £191 delivered.

Or same source, Rigida Chrisna(doesn't have wear indicator though).

You can up or down-spec the hubs

    Great reputation.

Ambrosio Excursions are tough, cheap and not super heavy, plus have a wear indicator. I have a set I use for winter riding, commuting, light touring and they've been very solid. I'd highly recommend them.

Otherwise, I think the only open-pro equivalent (in terms of weight) rim with a wear indicator is the DT 1.1 (or 1.2 actually as well).
